Balayage vs Highlights — what's the difference?
Clients frequently ask for 'blonde' without knowing the terminology. While both balayage and highlights lighten the hair, the techniques and results are quite different.
Traditional Highlights
Highlights use foils to lighten strands from root to tip. This technique creates a structured, uniform, and often highly contrasted look. It's excellent for clients wanting a very bright, all-over blonde effect starting right from the scalp.
The Balayage Technique
Balayage, meaning 'to sweep' in French, involves freehand painting the lightener onto the hair. This results in a softer, more graduated, sun-kissed effect with a natural root drag. Because the colour isn't applied directly to the scalp, the regrowth is much softer.
Which is Better for You?
Balayage is generally lower maintenance as the regrowth is less obvious, meaning you can go longer between appointments. Highlights require stricter root touch-ups every 6-8 weeks.
